BEACHDREAM

ALEX ZHANG

it was the beginning    the begging      in dream

I recall the same thing     he catches a salamander

& I name it           lover        he buys me a drink

he buys me           another       ok    so I let him enter

for a small price           what does it matter

the ocean is loose change        & call it memory now

the sky coral    & spinning like        quarters

the moon smoother       than a hairless body

the sun warmer        than his breath             has set

the tide beats      like the opening     of a register

& what I couldn’t know then I let    roll across

my tongue slicker than water     than metal

I wish to tell myself the moral before         it must

be learned      how lost boys          are found

in a place without men       in the same sand that

builds castles         before taking them back again
