Meet The mentors

OUR PROGRAM

We run several workshop sessions for students of all ages & experience throughout the year in poetry (winter, spring, summer).  We will continue to partner with schools and organizations to lower costs as much as possible for students while still compensating mentors & staff.

Each session of the ALL AGES series will consist of around 7 mentors with 5-6 students each.  Some mentors will return to work on multiple sessions, while others will work with us on only one.

Session Two (June 22nd - July 20th) consists of Fatimah Asghar, Mahogany L. Browne, Cynthia Cruz, Luther Hughes, Cynthia Dewi Oka, Julian Randall, Melissa Lozada-Oliva, and Danez Smith. Click here to apply.

During the four-week program, each carefully-structured week will interrogate a different facet of poetics, be it selfhood (identity, artistry, personhood, representation, the body, the mind), technique (form, space, breath, rhythm, movement), and/or other various thematics.  Students will be given daily reading assignments and several free-writing prompts centered around this theme.

In the middle of the week, mentors and students will come together for two video conferences.  The first one will be a lecture/discussion of readings for that week.  The second will be a workshop session for students in each group.

By the end of the week, students will submit two poems of their choosing to mentors.  Mentors will return comments on work before the next workshop session.

While mentors will be largely available as well, our On-Call Editors will be available to students throughout the week to answer questions, talk through readings, and/or edit work via chat or email.

At the end of each session, we will compile students' work alongside mentors' work in an anthology published on our website.

WHAT PEOPLE SAY

"Being able to share space with such incredible writers reminded me of the diligence it takes to do this work and I feel more grounded. The prompts and readings pushed me to explore parts of my artistry I’ve feared and fought. The bravery, honesty, and kindness of the poets learning with me held me along the way and as I return to the poems from this workshop I know I have them to turn to."
